Keepers selected penalty takers: Ancelotti
AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti
has revealed how his goalkeepers were responsible for choosing
the penalty takers in last month's Champions League final
against Liverpool.
Despite months of practice of shoot-out situations, the
Rossoneri came unstuck on the day as Liverpool emerged
victorious 3-2 on spot-kicks after a pulsating 3-3 draw after
120 minutes.
Milan midfielder Serginho shot high over the bar while Italy
international Andrea Pirlo and Ukrainian forward Andriy
Shevchenko saw their efforts saved by Liverpool goalkeeper
Jerzy Dudek, which ultimately gave the Reds the final victory.
"We were practising for months," admitted Ancelotti.
"I had asked our goalkeepers to make up the list as they are
used to having to face our shooters in training.
"Unfortunately, our three specialists missed."
But Ancelotti believes that by that time, Milan had already
lost the psychological battle after allowing Rafael Benitez's
men to hit back from a 3-0 half-time deficit.
"When we approached the spot-kicks all we had in our minds was
Liverpool's comeback and especially Dudek's two saves from
Shevchenko in extra-time."
