THE MATTHEW PACE
COLUMN

Matthew PaceWelcome to the Matthew Pace Column

Matthew Pace is a 32 year old Liverpool fan from Malta who will have his coloumn on ‘WALK ON’.

Matthew – businessman by trade, earns a living running catering outlets on the Maltese islands. He is married and has two children whom he outrightly adores, Christina 5 years and Michela 16 months.

He became a Liverpool fan just when the succesful era was about to commence in May 1977 when Liverpool lifted their first ‘European Cup’ - the famous 3-1 win against Borrusia Moenchengladbach. Since childhood Matthew was always known amongst friends to be a fervent Liverpool fan. Eventually in February 1995, he became one of the founders of the ever growing Liverpool Supporters Club in Malta.

Within the LSC (Malta) committee, Matthew has served as club treasurer, secretary and public relations officer. The latter was definitely his preferred role and one that created a very strong bond with all LFC personnel, managers and players. One of his, and other committee members' biggest achievements, was getting someone over as a first ever official visit.  This materialised when Phil Thompson and Sammy Lee opened the club premises in Mosta back in June 1999.

Matthew has watched the Reds no less than 20 times, interviewed Roy Evans, Gerard Houllier, Jamie Redknapp, Patrik Berger, Michael Owen and Nick Barmby.

His ultimate dream came true when the Malta committee convinced the Melwood management to send the Liverpool squad over for a mid-season training camp. The Reds, led by club chairman Mr. David Moores, came to Malta from the 26th January till the 29th January 2000. With what Matthew and the rest of the committee had achieved the LSC - Malta became the leading supporters club on the island despite having been in existence for just five years.

Since then he has been re-elected to the committee, but in October 2000 forwarded his resignation due to his heavy workload not giving him much time to devote to his beloved supporters club.

This column will be frequently updated, so make sure to check back regularly.
